Fuss over Beifuss
Bill Ellis
The Commercial Appeal
For those wondering just how powerful the power of the press is, look no further than MySpace.com, where a White Station High School group calling itself Scandaliz Vandalistz -- led by Alice Buchanan and Katherine Dohan -- has penned an endearing ode, "Hey Mr. Beifuss," to this newspaper's film critic (lyrics by fellow SV member Alanna Stewart).
"I didn't like your Moulin Rouge review," goes the opening line. "But what you wrote about Ghost World connected me to you." From there it only gets better, replete with Frankenstein references, hand claps, the use of "cool bloke" five times and a marriage proposal, all delivered in a low-fi Shaggs-meets-Shonen Knife kind of way.
Go to http://www.myspace.com/scandalizvandalistz to hear that one plus "Sophocles Rap," "Old English Sheepdog" and a doo-wop paean to "hamster lovin'" called "So Fuzzy" -- Langley Schools-esque intuitive pop from perhaps the only group to list French rapper MC Solaar; Sledge, Miss., singer-songwriter Kate Campbell; and Yale University's all-male vocal ensemble the Whiffenpoofs as influences.
